1. Why breast cancer chemo can cause hand and foot numbness (CIPN)
Per
NCI — Nerve Problems (Peripheral Neuropathy),
some chemotherapy agents can injure or disrupt peripheral nerves, causing numbness, tingling, burning, or a glove-and-sock sensation.
In breast cancer, the most common class is taxanes, especially paclitaxel and docetaxel (generic/INN names only).
Scientific mechanism: why fingertips and toes are hit first
Long sensory axons (to fingertips and toes) have high energy and microtubule demands.
Taxanes disrupt microtubule organization in cancer cells — and can also impair axonal transport inside neurons.
Sensory signaling then misfires, often starting at the tips and spreading upward in a “stocking-glove” pattern.

2. How long nerves take to repair (about 6 months–2 years)
A clinically reasonable window for meaningful improvement in many survivors is about 6 months to 2 years.
- Acute/subacute phase: After the last infusion, symptoms may plateau or improve slowly — lingering numbness in the first months is common
- Middle phase (~3–12 months): Touch sensation and balance often return gradually; burning pain may need medication and/or physical therapy
- Longer term (up to ~2 years): Many people reach their best recovery here; if symptoms stay severe, reassess with your team (including comorbidities such as diabetes)
Factors that can slow recovery: high cumulative dose, older age, diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency, smoking, and repeated injury to hands/feet.

3. Hormone therapy (tamoxifen / aromatase inhibitors) vs numbness and morning stiffness
After chemo, many people with hormone-receptor–positive breast cancer receive endocrine therapy such as
tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors.
Common effects of hormone-blocking medicines are morning joint stiffness and muscle/joint aches — not the same mechanism as taxane CIPN.
- Chemo CIPN: Numbness, tingling, glove-and-sock sensation ± neuropathic pain
- Endocrine therapy effects: Joint stiffness (especially in the morning), peri-articular muscle ache — may overlap so hands/feet “feel wrong”

4. Five steps to rehabilitate numb hands and feet after chemo
Tell your team how severe the numbness is (buttons? walking?). Screen diabetes, vitamin B12, and other medicines that can cause neuropathy.

5. Safety cautions when numbness reduces sensation
When fingertips and toes are numb, awareness of heat, cold, and pressure falls — the main danger is not only discomfort
but injury you do not feel.
- Heat: Test water temperature with an elbow or thermometer; avoid hot packs applied directly to numb skin
- Extreme cold: Some regimens increase cold sensitivity — wear gloves for freezer/fridge tasks if your clinician advises
- Wounds: Wear indoor shoes if soles are numb; check feet nightly; be careful with nail scissors
