1. Why finish dental work before chemo? Dental clearance and neutropenia explained
Dental clearance is not just a cosmetic cleaning. It reduces oral infection sources before the body enters a high-risk window after chemotherapy.
Preventing infection during neutropenia
Chemotherapy suppresses the bone marrow and temporarily lowers white blood cells.
If cavities, impacted wisdom teeth, gingivitis, or periapical abscesses are present,
oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause
neutropenic infection, which can be life-threatening.
Preventing osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ / MRONJ)
In breast cancer, the team may consider
bisphosphonates or denosumab
to protect bone or reduce skeletal involvement.
Extraction or jaw surgery while on these agents raises the risk of
medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ).
Complete dental procedures before starting those drugs.
2. ECG/Echo: protecting the heart muscle before anthracyclines
Many standard breast cancer regimens include
anthracyclines such as doxorubicin or epirubicin (“red chemo”),
and some plans include trastuzumab when HER2 is positive —
both groups can affect cardiac contractility (cardiotoxicity).

- Radiation after chemo (or in the order the team sets)
- Endocrine therapy for 5–10 years when ER+
